For two decades, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger stood as the undisputed titans of Hollywood action cinema, locked in a bitter 20-year feud. Behind the blockbuster box-office receipts and explosive franchises, however, raged one of the most intense and personal rivalries in entertainment history. Between the late 1970s and the late 1990s, the two superstars could not even bear to share a stage, let alone a film set.

A Flower Bowl At The 1977 Golden Globes

The animosity began at the 34th Golden Globe Awards in January 1977. Stallone had arrived as the toast of Hollywood with Rocky, which had earned six nominations. Schwarzenegger was attending as a nominee for New Star of the Year for Stay Hungry. Throughout the evening, as Rocky missed out on several early categories, Stallone noticed Schwarzenegger grinning at his table.

When Rocky finally secured the prestigious award for Best Motion Picture Drama, Stallone walked to the stage. On his way past Schwarzenegger table, the Philadelphia native grabbed an ornate floral centerpiece and hurled it directly at the Austrian bodybuilder. The dramatic gesture ignited a fierce rivalry that would dominate the industry for the next twenty years.

Bigger Guns, Fewer Body Fat Points, And Sabotage

Throughout the 1980s, the competition escalated into an all-out arms race. As Rambo battled The Terminator and Commando clashed with Cobra, both stars monitored each other output with obsessive scrutiny. They compared muscle mass, screen body counts, and the caliber of heavy artillery wielded in their respective films.

We were movie rivals, but we took the competitiveness to the extreme. We each had to have the best body, we had to kill more people in our films, and we had to have the biggest guns. It got out of control, and we tried to derail each other.

The hostility reached comical extremes when Schwarzenegger intentionally tricked Stallone into signing on for the 1992 comedy flop Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot. Hearing rumors that Schwarzenegger was pursuing the script, Stallone rushed to outbid him and claim the leading role. Only after production wrapped did Schwarzenegger admit he leaked his interest purely to bait Stallone into a box-office disaster.

Planet Hollywood And The Diplomatic Thaw

The first crack in the ice occurred in 1991 when Hollywood producer Robert Earl recruited both men as celebrity investors in Planet Hollywood. Alongside Bruce Willis, the rival stars were contractually obligated to embark on global press tours aboard private corporate jets. Trapped in close quarters across multiple continents, the two actors gradually began to view each other as peers rather than mortal threats.

The Defining Turning Point

The definitive resolution arrived in 2003 when Schwarzenegger stepped away from the film industry to run for Governor of California. With Arnold exiting cinema for politics, the competitive pressure that had fueled their hostility evaporated overnight.

Stallone recalled reaching out to Schwarzenegger with a moment of absolute clarity. With no box-office race left to fight, Stallone thanked him for lighting a competitive fire under his career for twenty years. Both men realized that their ferocious rivalry had forced each of them to reach heights they never could have achieved alone.

From Mortal Enemies To Inseparable Brothers

Today, Stallone and Schwarzenegger share one of the closest friendships in Hollywood. When Schwarzenegger finished his second term as Governor in 2011, Stallone immediately invited him to co-star in The Expendables franchise, followed by the prison thriller Escape Plan. Decades after throwing flowers across an awards ballroom, the two icons now spend holidays together, carve pumpkins in October, and speak with profound mutual respect about the rivalry that defined an era.
